Particle-Board Challenge!

A Current Project Blog

My mission is to provide you, my valued customer, with fine, handmade furniture and accents that catch your eye every time you walk into a room. I want your friends and neighbors to ask, "Just where did you get that piece?," and compliment you on your fine sense of style and furnishing selections. Whether you need a single piece, are adding to an existing set, or are ordering an entirely new set of furniture, your satisfaction is my number one goal.

Quality Custom Furniture for Affordable Prices

Handmade, affordable furniture is hard to find. Usually, affordable furniture is not handmade, nor is handmade furniture affordable. At Lakota Custom Designs, I strive to change that. Not every person that buys handmade furniture is willing to pay several thousand dollars for a piece or wait months and months to receive it. Though I have the greatest respect for those kinds of shops, my shop is not one of them.

Your Satisfaction

Your satisfaction is my number one goal. Bar none. The only kind of customers I want are happy customers. Your satisfaction is what drives me. Please let me know what I need to do to make you happy. To see what previous customers have to say about their custom furniture, please refer to my testimonials and reviews page.

Custom Furniture: Stained, Painted, or Left Natural

Whether I finish your handmade furniture or not is entirely your choice. When left natural, I always charge you a lesser price. When deciding upon a stained finish with a protective coat, it is important to understand that although we strive to give you a smooth finish, we cannot provide a factory-smooth finish. Again, I work to attain a smooth finish, but please let me know if this is of the utmost importance to you. I can focus more on this aspect of your project if it is a key element. In some cases I may recommend that you have a dedicated, professional finisher do this part of the project. In most cases, they charge around $100 or more per coat and treatment.

Unique Furniture Made Exclusively for You

Because all of my furniture is made to order, I have a zero returns policy. If for some reason you are dissatisfied with your purchase, I will work with you to strike a balance. If merited, I will provide a discount on a previous order, or offer one on a future order. My goal is to make you happy, but I also understand that sometimes things just don't work out that way. As I have shown in the past, I am committed to working with you when those situations arise (though very, very infrequently).

Why is Solid Wood Important?

When you walk into a furniture retailer or big box store, 99 times out of 100 the furniture they have on display is made from particle board or plywood. You can easily tell by looking at the underside of a table top, or the back of an entertainment center. The sad truth is that the only real wood is usually just a 1/16th inch layer on top of the plywood or particle board. Over time, that small layer of real wood separates from the substrate layers and causes a piece of furniture to quickly become one that soon needs to be replaced. Because Lakota Custom Designs uses only solid wood, there are no wood layers that can peel off. You don't have to worry about veneers detaching from their substrates. The next time you go into a furniture store or big box store, take a close look. You will start to notice the signs.

You Really Use No Particle Board At All?

Zip. Zero. Zilch. Particle board has its usefulness, but it is certainly not appropriate in the realm of quality, furniture. Plywood, on the other hand has its usefulness in this space. For Lakota Custom Designs, though, just a couple. I use 1 quarter inch oak and other varities of plywood for backing and flat door faces. That's it! And, because of the nature of how oak plywood is used by me, there are no exposed corners. As a result, you do not have to worry about veneer-from-substrate detachment with my short list of applications for plywood.
